Through the eyes of an intern…

My time thus far as an intern for Challenge Aspen has been spectacular. There is something special about spending every day working with great people and skiing on the mountain. The thing I have enjoyed most during the two months I have been working with Challenge Aspen is the number and variety of people I have had the opportunity to work with.

I did not know exactly what to expect when I began working for Challenge Aspen. However, it has been a journey filled with gratifying experiences. One of the most rewarding things I’ve been a part of was spending time with The Tennessee School for the Blind (TSB). For this camp, I was paired with a senior in high school from TSB and was responsible for being his eyes for the week. I was accountable for not only teaching him how to ski, but to guide him around the village and to enjoy all of the outside activities that were planned. Simply seeing the smile on my participant’s face when he finally glided on his skis down the hill or throw a snowball at one of his friends was priceless. These experiences validated why I wanted to do this job.

Whether it was working with TSB, assisting a ski instructor with a private lesson or working with injured soldiers in the Challenge Aspen Military Opportunities (C.A.M.O) camps, I have learned something from every individual I have worked with. I continue to look forward to the people I will be able to assist, interact and enjoy the mountain with over the next three months of my internship.
