2015-16 Winter Adaptive Sports Internship Application

Who we are: Challenge Aspen is a non-profit in Snowmass Village, CO dedicated to impacting lives by presenting meaningful recreational, educational and cultural experiences to individuals faced with cognitive and/or physical disabilities.

Who we are looking for: Outgoing adaptive sports interns with an intermediate to advanced skiing ability to be hired for the winter season to help achieve Challenge Aspen’s goals. Eight “On-The-Hill” Interns will primarily spend their time skiing and  working closely with participants.

Internship Dates: November 16, 2015 – April 17, 2016

*Hours will vary & include evenings, weekends and holidays

Responsibilities:

  • - Assist and be actively involved with REC programs
  • - Assist and be actively involved with CAMO (Challenge Aspen Military Opportunities) programs
  • - Assist Aspen Ski Co. instructors with lessons
  • - Be a “buddy” for the day
  • - Ski in a group setting with REC and CAMO camps and retreats
  • - Help organize special events and projects
  • - Office administrative work as required
  • - Plan and implement an individual project
  • - Plan and implement a group project with fellow interns

Requirements:

  • - Must be able to commit to full duration of internship
  • - 21 years of age or older
  • - Intermediate skiing level (if skiing ability is unsatisfactory, intern will be -replaced during the first week of on-snow training)
  • - Experience in fields of disabilities, outdoor education, etc. is preferred but not required
  • - CPR/First Aid Certification (acquired by the first day of internship)
  • - A valid driver’s license
  • - Pass a background check

Compensation:

  • OPTION 1:
    • - $950/month, no housing provided
    • - Season ski pass
  • OPTION 2:
    • - $450/month, housing provided
    • - Season ski pass

Timeline:

  • - Application deadline: Monday, August 31, 2015 – 11:59pm MDT (no late applications will be accepted)
  • - Final selection notification: September 2015

*Challenge Aspen does not cover relocation costs to/from the Roaring Fork Valley

Apprentice Pro

Responsibilities:

The Apprentice Pro (AP) will facilitate an exceptional on-hill experience for skiers with physical and/or cognitive disabilities. APs help Ski Pros conduct lessons and occasionally work as a ski buddy for our disabled participants. To qualify applicants must be strong skiers with equally strong customer service skills, but no other specialized knowledge is required. Challenge Aspen offers job training, a competitive salary, rent-controlled housing, and a four-mountain premier ski pass. In addition, Challenge Aspen offers financial support to returning APs who wish to pursue PSIA certification.

Requirements:

-Facilitate a professional and enjoyable on-hill learning experience for Challenge Aspen participants
-Assist with Recreation and Challenge Aspen Military Opportunities (CAMO) programs as needed
-Learn and adhere to Challenge Aspen policies and safety procedures
-Be a role model for excellence in all aspects of representation of Challenge Aspen
-Assist Snowsports Manager with equipment maintenance
-Assist with administrative projects as needed

Qualifications:

-Must be 21 or older
-Intermediate to advanced skiing and/or riding skills
-Ability to fulfill the physical requirements of the job, including the ability to lift 50lbs. or more
-Strong communication and interpersonal skills
-Professional at all times and high customer service focused strong customer service skills
-Flexible and adaptable
-Ability to commit to the entire ski season
-Ability to attend early season training session and willingness to participate in continuing education programs throughout the ski season
-Willingness to work long hours outdoors, often in below zero temperatures and snowy conditions

-Deliver the highest quality on-hill experiences for Challenge Aspen participants
-Motivated, collegial, dependable and professional team member
-Maintain a standard of fitness suitable for this position

Employment Details:

-Employment Term: November 20, 2015 through April 20, 2016
-Salary: $14/hr + $2/hr bonus if employees complete the seasonal commitment infull
-Rent controlled housing is available

Who we are looking for: Anyone interested in working with individuals with disabilities in an outdoor setting.  Experience working with individuals with disabilities is preferred, but not required.  All interns will receive multiple weeks of intensive training at the commencement of the internship.
